"Benitier Louis XV Period, Solid Silver, Belgium Circa 1750"
Very pretty Louis XV period hoy water vessel in solid silver engraved extensively with “rocaille” motifs. Its shape and decorations are absolutely typical for the production of goldsmiths in the southern Netherlands in the mid-eighteenth century. Unfortunately, it bears no hallmark. This may indicate that it was made at the order of a church, a chapter or a religious community, all exempt from taxes under the old regime. The fact that a sheet of silver from an older religious object was used also seems to point in this direction. On the back of the crucifix you can see older engravings. A Belgian control mark from the beginning of the 19th century is found at the foot of the cross.
