"Fireback With The Arms Of Jean-françois De Machault Abbot Of Morimond (65x65 Cm)"
Fireback, dated 1680, vintage 17th century, with the arms of Jean-François de Machault, prior of Tournac and 53rd regular abbot of Morimond in Haute-Marne (1667-1680). The Cistercian abbey of Morimond, 4th daughter of Citeaux, founded in the 12th century around 1115/1118, had up to 84 daughter abbeys without counting the priories. At the end of the 18th century, its lineage included 213 male abbeys and nearly 700 establishments (all types combined and including female abbeys). Morimond spread his daughter abbeys with great regularity from the beginning and his fame brought him an increasing number of disciples. After founding several colonies in the south of France around 1140, it spread to Spain where it played a leading role against the Almohads around the middle of the 12th century. Morimond suffered significant depredations during the wars of religion (1572), then during the Thirty Years' War (1636). After the revolution, the last monks were ordered to leave the premises in 1791. The abbey was dismantled, little by little, to serve as a quarry and sold as national property. Only the church is preserved with the hydraulic works undertaken by the monks. The Machault family established in Ile de France, from the beginning of the 16th century with Simon de Machault, Commissioner of the Châtelet of Paris in 1515, gave France a number of church people, robes, soldiers and high dignitaries, who many have received distinctions, titles and positions commensurate with their dedication and qualities. Motto written on the plaque: ET PULLIS CORVORUM INVOCANTIBUS EUM The full motto is: Qui dat jumentis escamipsorum et pullis corvorum invocantibus eum. Which could be translated: Who gives to the wild beasts and the young ravens who invoke him. This plaque was found at Curvale in Tarn. Blazon: Argent with three raven heads torn sable, in crest a raven head sable and in supports two ravens sable. Crown, miter, stock. Its weight is 98 kg.
