Dogon statues, sometimes considered to embody the spirit of the deceased, are used in seasonal rituals, including those linked to planting and harvest times. In parallel with Islam, the religion of the Dogon is structured around four main cults: the Lébé, linked to fertility and led by the spiritual Hogon, the Wagem, an ancestral cult led by the patriarch, the Binou, who invokes the world of spirits and is led by a specialized priest, and finally the society of masks which takes care of funeral rites. According to Dogon cosmogony, the first ancestors, the Nommo, were bisexual divine beings coming from water and created in the sky by Amma, the creator god. Descending to earth aboard an ark, the Nommo founded the eight Dogon lineages and passed on knowledge of weaving, blacksmithing and agriculture to their descendants. Ref. : "Dogon" by H.
