"View Of The Hongs Of Canton"
Chinese school of the 19th century "View of the hongs of Canton" oil on canvas, 44x76 cm In the painting presented here which depicts Canton, the Western "factories" called "hongs" are depicted - in fact, following the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, Shanghai became one of the most important ports for trade with the West. Many European and American traders had offices on the Bund such as Russel & Co, Heard & Co, Jardine, Matheson and others - You can see the flags of the Western states next to each other: the American, French, English flags waving on their respective factories flanking the Episcopal church and to the left the clubhouse, boathouse and numerous Chinese junks. The view can be dated precisely from the presence of the church on the seafront, built in 1847 and burned in the fire of 1856 which razed the hongs to the ground.
