Roman School, 18th century
Still life with parrot and figs
Oil on canvas, 43 x 59 cm
With frame, cm 58 x 74

The canvas in question depicting a Still Life with parrot and figs, albeit of contained measures, manages to express an unexpected solemnity, thanks to a lighting direction able to evoke and best describe the scenic space. From a stylistic point of view, the work has remarkable qualities and can be referred to an artist active in Italy in the eighteenth century, belonging specifically to the Roman context. For the delicacy of the chromatic drafts and the pastel shades, the work could approach the results achieved by Ludovico Stern (Rome, 1709 - 1777), to be counted among the protagonists of the 18th century Roman painting. Ludovico Stern was born in Rome, where he trained under the teachings of his Bavarian father Ignazio, a skilled painter of still lifes who had moved to Italy around 1700. Stern began to work in his father’s workshop at an early age, studying at the Academy of Parma, where he saw the fine execution of still lifes by Giuseppe Pesci (1679 - 1759). In 1756 he was appointed Academician of merit by the Accademia di San Luca, while in 1741 he was received into the Congregation of the Virtuous of the Pantheon.
This canvas is also compared with the flowered vases preserved in the Museum of Palazzo Pretorio in Prato.

Sober in conceiving his creations, the artist expresses with elegance his adherence to the rocaille taste, for the use of pastel shades and a fresh, lively, light-soaked drafting. The image, moreover, even if visibly distant from the examples of exasperated naturalism, does not lack of well expressed requirements of mimesis in the yield of the petals and the beautiful plumage of the parrot, evoking those essential effects to offer the observer the illusion of reality.
