Nicolas van Ravesteyn (Zaltbommel 1661-1750 Zaltbommel) A portrait of a lady Oil on canvas, 47.1 cm x 35.5 cm, presented in a modern gilded frame of an 18th century model. Signed and dated N. v. Ravesteyn/ 169[2?] lower right. On the back of the canvas, fragment of a printed and embossed label with a crowned coat of arms; also inscribed in pencil; Marie de Sablière[?] / NV Ravensteyn; also a fragmentary label in pen and brown ink 'by Gaspard Netscher' and also another label 'no 94 / 1318/netscher/gaspard' Nicolaes van Ravesteyn was part of an important family of painters. He was one of the leading portrait painters of the early 18th century in the Netherlands. Around thirty works are currently known by this painter. The works of this painter are particularly interesting because they show the social environment of the elite in Zaltbommel and its surroundings.
