"Jan Waclaw Zawadowski Dit Zawado (russian Poland 1891 - Aix-en-provence 1982) "provençal Landscape"
Dear customers, I am putting this painting back on sale because after 7 months the buyer was not able to honor his purchase, several other people were interested so I am putting it back on sale like this everyone will have a 2nd chance to buy it. acquire Very pretty oil/canvas by Jan waclaw Zawadowski known as Zawado representing a Provençal landscape signed lower right. Format outside frame 38x55cm. This is therefore a superb post-impressionist canvas by Zawado who paints a Provençal landscape in the surroundings of Aix en Provence around 1945/1950. Beautiful new work in the purest tradition of the artist, whether by his touch, between power and lightness by broad, very nervous brush strokes and his palette, very typical thanks to his pastel tones of greens, blues, pinks or reds /orange. Indeed we recognize a work by Zawado at first glance, isn't that the greatest quality of any great painter, to stand out from the others!!! Despite everything, we can see a certain resemblance with certain works of Henri Hayden. Jan-Waclaw Zawadowski, known as Zawado, (Russian Poland 1891 - Aix-en-Provence 1982), is a Polish painter, from the School of Paris, close to Post-Impressionism. For his most detailed biography and to see several works, his exhibitions etc... I advise you to go to the official website of the artist here: http://www.zawado.net At the age of 13, young Zawadowski discovered French painting. In 1910, he entered the studio of Professor Józef Pankiewicz, at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. In 1912, the latter encouraged him to go to Paris. After a short stay in La Ruche, he moved to Montmartre. He then became one of the actors of the artistic community of Montparnasse: Apollinaire, Cendrars, Chagall, Delaunay, Léger, Max Jacob, Modigliani. He then signed his only exclusive contract with the German art dealer: Paul Cassirer who organized several exhibitions for him in Germany. During the war, he stayed in Spain for four years, notably in Madrid, where he met his Polish painter friends as well as Arthur Rubinstein. In 1919, the war ended, he was able to return to Paris. In 1920, Modigliani had just died and Zawado took over his workshop. In the summer, often in the company of other artists, Zawado goes to their favorite destinations: to Saint-Cirq Lapopie, to Collioure at the same time as Foujita, to Sanary or to Le Blanc, as well as to Brittany to paint landscapes. Very close to Léopold Zborowski, one of the great dealers in modern art and in particular Modigliani, he entrusted him with the sale of his paintings. It was he who asked him to sign his works: Zawado. In 1928, he joined the “Circle of Polish Artists in Paris”. Between 1920 and 1930, he participated in the artistic life of the first School of Paris. He rubbed shoulders with many writers, musicians and painters of course, his closest friends being: Apollinaire, Cendrars, Chagall, Delaunay, Léger, Max Jacob, Modigliani. He exhibits in Poland, in Paris (at the Galerie Bénézit) and in London. In 1930, Zawado began staying in Aix-en-Provence. In 1938, he took over as director of the Polish Institute of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1945, he settled permanently in Aix, but kept a workshop in Paris. In the sixties, the first major personal exhibitions took place in Aix, in particular at the Galerie Spinazzola. From now on, Zawado exhibits mainly in the south of France. However, a very large retrospective took place in 1975 in Krakow, followed in 1976 by a personal exhibition in New York. From then on, a whole world of writers, musicians and especially painters came to visit him. Georges Duby, regarding the 1991 retrospective at the Galerie de la Prévôté in Aix, writes: “…Zawado's meditation before the light of this country continued for half a century, and we discern in his work today, brought together, what under this meditation, he brought with him from the origins: a emotion before the color brought to its strongest vivacity, and this ardor above all, which carries the composition in the gush of the gusts..." On September 24, 2021 in Room 6 at the Hôtel Drouot, a work by Zawado Mediterranean landscape oil on canvas 54 x 73 cm was sold: €21,760 world record for the artist. This original canvas is in good condition, I just point out a few tiny and small repairs with two small inserts on the back.
