The model is on an enlarged scale to provide a better view for learning.
Sculptor Franz Josef Steger (1845 - 1938) collaborated with anatomist-pathologist Carl Ernst Bock (1809 - 1874) at Leipzig University to produce models for student teaching. These were either direct casts or sculptures in plaster, porcelain or wax. Steger is also known for his study of the early use of plastics.
Steger's instructive models were sold through international catalogs and scientific stores in Germany.
