This work by Schmidt that we are offering you is particularly beautiful, it depicts a main street where many characters are active.
The artist became particularly known for his works with an orientalist character, a subject for which he distinguished himself and which today arouses keen interest for amateur collectors.
The scene most certainly takes place in Morocco, a large, well-known city I think, the artist has painted Morocco a lot (If a friendly person recognizes this place I would thank them in advance for kindly enlightening me, if possible).
The artist came to Morocco in the 1920s-1930s where he sympathized with the famous painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962). He then met with real success with his portraits and landscapes of Casbah de l'Atlas and the cities of Morocco, but he gradually fell into oblivion due to his excessive drinking.
In recent years his works have been the subject of a rediscovery, as we can see in the orientalist sales catalogs, notably at "Gros & Delettrez", a renowned auction house specializing in orientalist painting: oil paintings. “Schmidt” oil like the one we offer here are often estimated and sold around 3500/4500 euros. Numerous sales results appear on the Artnet or Artprice reference sites.
The last photo shows the estimate for a similar painting sold some time ago.
