Charcoal study for a sculpture representing a head. The drawing is signed with the monogram at the bottom right and dated 45, it is countersigned on the back in full and dated. Day Schnabel (1898-1991) was born in Vienna where she studied painting. She went to Paris in 1935 to follow the teachings of sculptors Gimond, Malfray, Maillol and Zadkine but the war pushed her to emigrate to New York where she exhibited regularly. She then obtained American citizenship. After the war, she returned to settle in Paris where she exhibited regularly (notably at the Denise René gallery) as well as in the United States.
