Persian Nahavand rug in hand-knotted wool in Iran circa 1950/1960 for a size of 146 cm wide by 253 cm long.
In good condition, like all old or older carpets, shows slight wear. Nahavand or Nahawand: town in the province of Hamadan in Iran.
Nahavand rugs are knotted with high quality wool, very supple and shiny.
The dominant colors are red, blue and beige.
The particular semi-geometric decoration of this type generally consists of a central medallion surrounded by a profusion of stylized flowers and leaves connected by branches.
The spandrels (corners) and the wide border present a clever, almost geometric design.
Our model is no exception to this rule, a large medallion like a large stylized flower, accompanied by two pendants in the shape of a halberd sits on a red field covered with stylized blue and red flowers and branches.
We also find vases and stylized animals on certain examples, which is rather rare.
They are tied with strong, thick, shiny thread, often dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand.
This yarn gives a durable surface and a beautiful color palette.
What they have in common is that they are now woven with cotton warp threads and a weft thread between each row of knots.
The patterns are often geometric, but there are also relatively stylized floral patterns.
Old rugs (before 1920) are often knotted on a wool warp, unlike today's warps made of cotton.
# Newer rugs from after 1980 are often dyed with synthetic colors and lower quality wool than older rugs.
This rug has been professionally and environmentally friendly cleaned.
