The Luba, also known as Baluba in Chiluba, are a people of Central Africa. Their origin goes back to Katanga, particularly in the region of the Lubu River, hence their name (Baluba, meaning "the Lubas"). They come from a secession of the Songhoy ethnic group, led by Ilunga Kalala, who succeeded the old king Kongolo, venerated since then in the form of a python. In the 16th century, they established a state organized into decentralized chiefdoms, stretching from the Kasai River to Lake Tanganyika. These chiefdoms cover small territories without clearly defined borders, bringing together at most three villages.
