"Thailand - Phra Malaï In The Underworld - Gilt Bronze - Rattanakosin - 19th"
Pretty and rare gilded bronze representing the pious monk Phra Malaï visiting hell. He is cast standing on a lotus pedestal, wearing the samghati and an alms bowl around his right shoulder. The monk himself, with his right shoulder uncovered as befits a member of the Mahānikaya school, takes up the stylized and refined forms of the last period of Ayuthayā. The blackish base is teeming with deformed beings and skeletal priests. On the sides, we discover representations of severed heads, on the front, a character is devoured by a centipede. Very good general condition. On his return to earth, in memory of the damned begging him to intercede for them, the holy man bears witness to the bad conditions of reincarnation and devotes himself to pious works. Origin: Thailand. Period: Rattanakosin - 19th. Dimensions: Height: 27.5 cm; Length: 15.5cm; width: 12 cm.
