Eastern Kivu, Zaire / Congo
First third of the 20th century
Wood, plant fibers, pigments

Figure in the form of a two-faced mask, known as an "alunga".
The prominent eyes are largely encircled by a double rim forming the superciliary arches, and meet again at mouth level, with a central separation representing the nose. The mouth is shaped like a small rectangle with a cavity. The forehead is small and rounded.
The base is rough-cut.
This sculpture is repeated on the other side.
The vertical part between the heads, like the "coup", is lined with natural fibers.
Traces of ochre and white pigments remain around the eyes.
