What makes Ariane's story original is that she is one of the very rare heroines (perhaps even the only one) to achieve a status usually reserved for male heroes in mythology, at the moment of their apotheosis. Ariadne attains divine status by becoming the wife of Dionysus, and then joins the ranks of the Olympian gods.
Only Heracles obtains such an honor after his death at the stake when he is finally admitted to his father Zeus and Hera offers him the hand of her daughter Hebe in marriage.
That's not all since Ariadne and Dionysus are among the rare examples of marital bliss in Greek mythology. The myth of Ariadne therefore deserves a closer look.
