Dionís Bennàssar was born on April 3, 1904 in Pollensa, Majorca, into a peasant family. Despite his childhood agricultural work, he quickly demonstrated a talent for drawing. He attended drawing classes in Palma, but his free spirit and unconventional artistic ideas brought him back to Pollensa after a brief period of study. Despite a collarbone injury that paralyzed his right hand during his military service, he developed his painting skills using his left hand. His painting style is influenced by the majestic nature of Mallorca and by artists like Anglada Camarasa and Tito Cittadini. From 1940 he began to exhibit his works successfully, receiving critical acclaim and scholarships to study in other Spanish cities. In 1943 he married and in 1945 his son Antonio was born. His artistic career underwent two distinct periods: an early period of intense technical experimentation and a period of full artistic maturity, characterized by his original oil paintings, notably underwater landscapes and mythological subjects. Dionís Bennàssar stands out as one of the best landscape painters in Mallorca, exploring new artistic languages. He died suddenly on December 12, 1967, but his artistic legacy lives on, with posthumous tributes paid across Spain. In 1981 he was named Illustrious Son of Pollensa in recognition of his artistic influence in his hometown.
