"Bout-drawing-love And Psyche-neoclassic School-after Michel Coxcie-19th"
LOVE AND PSYCHÈ DRAWING (Unsigned) Pencil, sepia wash and gray wash 23 cm x 28 cm Early 19th century Neoclassical school After MICHIEL COXCIE (1499-1592) Copied for the stained glass windows of the Château d'Ecouen Condé Museum in Chantilly This sheet of great refinement is the interpretation by a high-level artist of an Italian engraving from the beginning of the 16th century, executed after a drawing attributed to the Flemish Michel Cocxie. It reproduces one of the episodes from the story of Cupid and Psyche, told by the Latin writer Apuleius. Where the etching reveals a certain hardness in its lines and its contrasts, our brush copy is velvety, made of softness in the touch and delicacy in the shades of brown. The designer has framed his composition with a gray trompe-l'oeil bevel which creates an illusion. Note that the series engraved after Cupid and Psyche, to which the model of our drawing belongs, was copied in forty-four stained glass windows executed during the Renaissance for the Château d'Ecouen. These stained glass windows now adorn an entire gallery of the Condé Museum in Chantilly.
