"Apollo & Cupid. Bronze With Brown Patina, End Of The 18th Century."
Bronze sculpture with brown patina and golden highlights, resting on a small black marble base. Height: 67 cm This very beautiful bronze with beautiful carving represents Apollo in a contrapposto which gives the character flexibility and a certain eroticism, his head is slightly turned towards Cupid who extends his right arm in the direction of the young god, causing a exchange of knowing glances... Our model was very probably executed by an Italian or perhaps French artist at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, we will say around 1800. Related work: François du Quesnoy (1597-1643), Apollon and Cupid (around 1635-1640), H. 66 cm, bronze with light brown patina, Vaduz, Prince of Liechtenstein collection, Inv. S 610 Related literature: -Marion Boudon-Machuel, François du Quesnoy (1597-1643), Arthena, Paris, 2005, pp.263-271. The artist's biographer François du Quesnoy indicates that the group of Apollo and Cupid would have been made to accompany a group of Mercury and Cupid whose model had been commissioned by the Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani, around 1630/1636. The sculptor was inspired by the attitude of Antinous of Belvedere. Very good condition. Sold with a certificate of expertise.
