"Oil On Canvas "saint John The Baptist" XVIIth Century"
Oil on canvas representing Saint John the Baptist from the 17th century in its period gilded wood frame. John the Baptist is an important character in Christianity, he leads an austere life on the banks of the Jordan River where he baptizes those who wish, one day Jesus asks him for baptism, it is there that he recognizes in him the messiah and said “behold the lamb of God”. Saint John the Baptist is represented here sitting on a rock at the edge of the river accompanied by his lamb, he holds a cross with a phylactary "ecce agnus dei" (here is the lamb of God). This naive portrait has a particular charm. Good condition, restorations from use and maintenance, repainted, pieces on the reverse, beautiful patina of the old gilding (wear visible in the photos) rear frame replaced by our restorer.
