Exceptional expressive bust of the great sculptor from Aix en Provence Hippolyte FERRAT who represents the famous félibre Fréric Mistral.
This bust was made by the artist Ferrat in 1880 based on a photograph of the famous poet. The work was acclaimed by the public who came to attend the first performance given in Aix en Provence of Gounod's "Mireille", in the presence of Mistral himself.
A copy of the bust, with a different patina, is kept at the F.Mistral Museum in Maillane.
In 2024, we will celebrate Frédéric MISTRAL on the occasion of his 110th anniversary of his death, his 120th anniversary of his Nobel Prize (1904) and his 170th anniversary of the creation of Félibrige (1854).
Student of James Pradier, Hippolyte Romain Ferrat is a sculptor from Aix en Provence. He won the second Prix de Rome in 1850 with The Death of Achilles.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1849 to 1870.
He also occasionally participated in exhibitions in the provinces, particularly in Marseille.
