Fiji Islands, Melanesia
19th century
Hardwood with glossy patina
Length : 90 cm
(traces of use)
Identifiable by its "rifle butt" shape, this monoxyle wooden puzzle has a cylindrical handle ending in a bumpy protrusion and a characteristic head resembling the wide-open jaw of a Pacific boa. Indeed, the word gata means 'snake' in Fijian.
The distal part is finely incised on both sides with hexagonal lozenges arranged in three cartouches separated by pairs of bands with sawtooth friezes.
