Abbot Henri Jean-Baptiste Grégoire, born in 1750 in Vého and died in 1831 in Paris, is a Catholic priest, constitutional bishop and French politician, one of the main figures of the French Revolution. Abbot Grégoire joined the Third Estate and, at the Constituent Assembly, he demanded not only the total abolition of privileges and slavery but also advocated universal male suffrage. Founder of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts and the Bureau des longitudes, he participated in the creation of the Institut de France, of which he became a member.
