A Large Medici Lion Carved In Linden Wood, Life Size
A magnificent Italian Medici lion carved in lime wood, life size, very decorative, from the end of the 19th century.
The original marble Medici lions stood with one paw on a ball or sphere, their heads turned to the side, one lion being of ancient origin and the other of the 16th century. They were placed at the Villa Medici in Rome in 1598 and have been exhibited since 1789 in Rome at the Loggia dei Lanzi.
