Aubusson “greenery” Tapestry, 18th Century flag

Object description :

"Aubusson “greenery” Tapestry, 18th Century"
- This wool and silk tapestry offers us a window opening onto greenery where nature and the presence of man, signified by architectural elements in the background, coexist. The exposed vegetation appears with a lot of character, it is transcribed by this imposing tree in the center which rises to the full height of the tapestry, and with a plant with strong vitality at its foot. This vegetation is joined by a bird, its presence further enlivens the composition.

- This tapestry is characteristic of the Verdures produced between the 17th and 18th centuries in the Aubusson region. Of infinite variety, Greenery remains a constant in the production of these workshops which make it one of their favorite themes. It was a mass production widely exported for a clientele delighted to find a decorative object refreshing their interiors, and even more so when these weavings were hung in groups to form a "green room" If the exhibition of a green nature is their main theme, their differences lie in particular in the quality of the design, the fineness of the weaving and their border. The tapestry we are looking at, a portière, has a decorative border displaying elegant motifs of flowers and various carefully composed ornaments, arranged in the form of candelabras, in symmetrical compositions.

- Lined tapestry, ring fixing system.

- Condition of use. Restorations and wear, some open relay seams.
