"Grand Tour: The Arc De Triomphe De Septimius Sévère And Its Surroundings "
Beautiful watercolor circa 1780, representing visitors elegantly dressed in the fashion of the end of the 18th century in front of the ruins of the Arc de Triomphe of Septimius Severus, in the heart of the Roman forum. The execution of this watercolor is very delicate. This monument was erected in 203 AD, to celebrate the victory of the emperor over the Parthians. This drawing is indeed the work of a traveling painter, who, according to custom among artists, like young people from good society, took the Grand Tour. As the current photo shows, it has a documentary character. It can be compared to the style of Nicolle or Jean Baptiste LALLEMENT. (I would rather go for this one). It is on its original blue mount, the frame is late 18th century with a few chips, the background cardboard is early 20th century..
