Very good condition

Brought to light by the retrospective devoted to him at the Château Saint-Jean museum in Nogent-le-Rotrou in 2005, Jacques Berland is one of these little masters who make French painting so charming. An authentic talent, driven by a real technique and a real vision. “How was it that this artist, originally from Perche d’Eure-et-Loir, remained unknown to us? » asked Françoise Lécuyer-Champagne, curator of the museum. The answer was given by biographical analysis: Jacques Berland, born in 1918, stopped painting in 1962, at the age of 44. A resolution taken when he had just been appointed lecturer for national museums (he spoke four languages). But the grandeur of the Louvre and that of its geniuses crushed him. He gave up trying to write his own mark in the long history of art...

Yet what promises he had given birth to! It has been said: an authentic talent revealed after the war, when he was finally able to enter the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. It was 1946; he had Jean Souverbie as his master. A very good master, let us point out, who taught him the strength of lines and the play of colors. In 1950, François Depret, in Le Monde, praised his work, “strong and dark like the soil”. This is the start of a clever rise in power. In 1953, he became a resident of Casa Velázquez in Madrid. He joined the School of Paris and exhibited in the famous Charpentier gallery, alongside Bazaine, Brayer, Buffet, Estève, Manessier, Picasso, Pignon, Staël, Utrillo, Van Dongen, Vlaminck and Vasarely! Then he continued with a study trip to the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam. Promising work, opening onto the idea, perfectly admissible, that Jacques Berland embodies another Buffet, with graphics as sure but more dreamlike...

Alas, Jacques Berland only loved the absolute. So he stopped painting. By happily leaving behind these drawings and these paintings which make us happy today.
