Pair of oils on canvas signed by Johann Balthasar Bauer (1811-1883) Superb oils on canvas representing an elderly man smoking a pipe while reading "the illustrated newspaper of Vienna" and a grandmother rocking an infant Canvases signed lower right straight with the brush Very expressive faces, finely rendered drapes and warm colors The canvases are original rectangular and could be framed differently Exceptional quality frames, Louis XVI inspiration with channel interior highlighted with a row of pearls Original patina Some minimal restorations (2 restorations on the female portrait measuring 1x1 cm) Pair of very nice sized portraits with high quality frames which give a lot of perspective to the whole h: 97.5 cm width: 86 cm depth: 11 cm Canvas at sight h: 68.2 cm width: 53.2 cm Entire canvas h: 69.2 cm width: 55.8 cm Biography: Johann Balthasar Bauer Painter and lithographer born in Frankfurt in 1811 and died in the same city in 1883 From 1829 to 1834, he assiduously attended the Frankfurt School of Art. Initially a painter of religious subjects, he later painted landscapes and portraits. Among his religious paintings we cite: "the prodigal son", "the feast of Easter". He executed scenes representing the creation of the world in the Carmelite church in Frankfurt.
