Object description :

"The Last Supper After Da Vinci, Carved In Basswood, Attr. To Hans Mayr, Bavaria, Ca. 1865."
The Last Supper after Leonardo da Vinci in carved basswood with blackened parts.

Very finely executed representation inspired by the famous fresco in the refectory of Sainte-Marie-des-Grâces in Milan; fairly faithful restitution down to the details of the table.

Southern Germany, Bavaria, Oberammergau, attributed to Hans Mayr, circa 1865. A stone's throw from the Austrian Tyrol, the small town of Oberammergau was home to many artisan wood carvers in the 19th century specializing in the creation of religious figurines.
Another example of this Supper can be seen at the Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset, England (Inv. NT 1254554 2).
