Jean-François Lapie (1720-1797) - Louis XV period Rosewood and Kingwood marquetry commode.

An elegant, slightly curved chest of drawers opening with four drawers in three rows on the front, in Rosewood veneer in Kingwood frames highlighted with boxwood or stained sycamore fillets. Belgian Rance marble top.

A fine French work of the Louis XV period circa 1765-1770, stamped by Jean-François Lapie Master in 1763 and JME Jurande des Menuisiers Ébénistes Parisiens.

Sizes: H 33.85 Inches - W 50.39 Inches - D 24.40 Inches.

In very fine condition, restored for use and maintenance, varnished with buffer. 18th-century marble, perhaps added.

Biography:

Jean-François Lapie (1720-1797): Cabinetmaker in Paris, received his Master's degree on December 15, 1763.

First cousin of Nicolas Alexandre and Jean Lapie, Jean-François Lapie acquired his master's degree late in life, setting up shop on rue de Charenton before moving to rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where he lived until he died in 1797.

His stamp can be found on a few pieces of furniture with classical lines. His work is also illustrated by a few marquetry pieces featuring flowering branches. An example of his work is a commode with a rather unusual shape, which was part of Viscount Beuret's furnishings at the Château de Dampierre.
