Biography:

Zacharie Noterman or Zacharie Notermann or Zacharias Noterman, Ghent 1820 and Paris 1890, was a Belgian painter and engraver who specialized in painting singeries, scenes of monkeys performing human activities, as well as paintings of dogs.

Son of Jean Noterman, painter-decorator, and Marie-Catherine Haelterman, he was trained by his older brother, Emmanuel Norterman, before continuing his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
He lived in Antwerp for a while with his brother before moving to Paris.
He specialized in singeries, humorous paintings featuring monkeys dressed in costumes, and performing human activities (trades, hobbies, and pleasures of the time, such as playing dice, music, or smoking).
He also produced paintings of dogs and cats, as well as circus scenes and engravings with subjects similar to his paintings.
During his career, he participated several times in the Salon de Peinture et de sculpture in Paris.
He died in Paris in 1890.
