Henri Pfeiffer's work is part of the abstract movement. According to his admirers, his canvases and watercolours have a truly musical harmony. It was this characteristic that he developed throughout his life, through his paintings and watercolours, but also through his personal research, which is partly detailed in his book "L'harmonie des couleurs".
Henri Pfeiffer's works are currently collected in France, Germany, England, Switzerland and the United States.
1907: Born in Cassel to an architect father and a pianist mother. Henri Pfeiffer comes from a family with a dozen painters in its family tree, the oldest known being a stained-glass painter from the 16th century.
1921: studies anatomical drawing with the sculptor Carl Menser at Bonn University.
1922: Major painting studies with Hans Thuar (de).
1924: Apprenticeship at the Bauhaus in Weimar.
1925: undertakes special research at the Bonn College of Chemistry with his uncle after the closure of the Bauhaus. Develops a new technique for painting on canvas.
1927: Creation of a new technique for watercolour on paper.
1928: Enrolment at the University of Cologne.
1929: Returns to the reopened Bauhaus in Dessau.He studied with Vassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
1931: moves to Düsseldorf with Paul Klee.
1932: completes his doctorate in Cologne, painting and creating his own work during his studies.
1933: the Nazis close the Bauhaus again, banning Henri Pfeiffer from practising his art. 1952: Henri Pfeiffer is naturalised as a French citizen and receives a research commission from France.1956: his book "L'Harmonie des couleurs" is published by Dunod in Paris. 1959 and 1961: exhibition of his watercolours in Paris. 1960 to 1985: Henri Pfeiffer teaches chromatology in Paris, in particular at the École des Arts Appliqués and in various faculties. His work is regularly exhibited in France and throughout the world. 1994: Henri Pfeiffer died at home at the age of 87.
Henri Hans was a Bauhaus abstract painter of German origin. He is best known for his work on colour harmony. His father was an architect and his mother a pianist. Around ten members of his family were painters, the most famous being a stained-glass painter in the 16th century.
In 1921, he began studying anatomical drawing with the sculptor Carl Menser at Bonn University. He then went on to study painting with Hans Thuar. In 1924, he began his apprenticeship at the Bauhaus in Weimar.The following year, he carried out special research with his uncle at the Bonn College of Chemistry.After the Bauhaus closed, he developed a new technique for painting on canvas.In 1927 he developed a new technique for watercolour on paper.He then decided to enrol at the University of Cologne in 1928. But in 1929, the Bauhaus reopened in Dassau.He studied with Vassily Kandisky and Paul Klee.
He moved to Düsseldorf in 1931. The following year, he took his doctorate in Cologne, painting and creating his work during his studies. In 1933, the Bauhaus was once again closed by the Nazis, who prevented Pfeiffer from practising his art. He fled Germany and became a naturalised French citizen in 1952, receiving a research commission from France. His book L'harmonie des couleurs was published in 1956 by Dunod in Paris. In 1959 and 1961,
he exhibited his watercolours in Paris. From 1960 to 1985, he taught chromatology at various faculties in Paris, and his work was regularly exhibited in France and abroad. He died in his home in Maisons-Laffitte at the age of 87 - Pfeiffer's work is part of the abstract movement.
