"Marie-anne Ichanson: “the Pink Basque Port”"
Marie-Anne Ichanson (1889-1964): “Pink Basque Port”, gouache on paper 32 x 40 cm, mounted in a beautiful modern silver frame 52 x 60 cm (small chips). Some waviness of the paper due to the technique. Although the Artist was originally from Tarn, she studied under the great Jean-Paul Laurens, from nearby Toulouse and, if he taught her his beautiful classical craft, she was quick to release her touch, particularly in her works from the 1920s where she is closer to the Fauves such as Othon-Friesz or even more so Marquet. Based in Paris, she exhibited every year at the Salon des Artistes Français of which she was a member and traveled a lot, Italy, France, Spain as in our gouache which is titled “Basque Port” on the back. Even if I did not identify the place more precisely, it represented San Sebastian or Santander and many other places in the southern Basque Country, often ports like our gouache taken in the early morning in the pink light of dawn.
