August Weckesser (1821 in Winterthur -1899 in Rome).
He attended the studio of the painter David Eduard Steiner in Winterthur (1840) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (from 1841). He had a workshop in Munich (1843-1848).
Returning to Winterthur (1848), he continued his training with Johann Caspar Weidenmann, then was a student of the history painter Gustave Wappers at the Antwerp Academy (1851-1853), where he met Ernst Stückelberg.
After a stay in Paris, he returned to Munich (1856-1857).
In 1858, he moved to Rome via Venice and Florence, then made study trips to southern Italy.
Considered an important history painter, W. mainly painted scenes from Swiss history (Death of Zwingli on the battlefield, 1854). He also left genre scenes of the Italian countryside, portraits of children and treated literary themes.
