Late 19th century bust after Jean Baptiste Carpeaux in Carrara marble. Smiling Neapolitan fisherman wearing a hat. Perfect condition. Base 17x17. 25kg. Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux is a French sculptor, painter and designer. He arrived in Paris in 1838 and began his apprenticeship at the School of Fine Arts in 1844. In September 1854, he won the Prix de Rome for Hector imploring the gods for his son Astyanax. He entered the Villa Medici in 1856 and then traveled to Italy which inspired his famous work The Shell Fisherman who would not hesitate to decline into infinity. In 1862, he made his grand return to Paris where he received numerous orders, notably from Napoleon III. In 1868, he moved to Auteuil to create his workshop in order to publish several versions of his works for commercial purposes.
