The albumen print is mounted on a carte de visite with the label of the studio Crewes & Sons.
Charles F. Crewes, photographer, "watchmaker and jeweler" had set up a photographic studio and shop in Cape Town in 1878.
He had purchased this image to the photographers William and Michael Henry Durney who signed the photograph in the plate.
