Pierre De Maria, a Franco-Swiss painter, graduated from the Arts et Métiers and, aged just 18, enlisted for the First World War, a particularly traumatic experience. "I enlisted in 1914 out of a taste for the rare spectacle. It was a long and atrocious war, but I learnt to love charred landscapes and fire- breathing monsters of iron and steel", he said in 1980.

On his return from combat, he took up painting, exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne in 1923. Close to Henri-Pierre Roché, he became friends with the Surrealists. He observed a world of paradox, where the omnipresent machine coexisted with man, between fascination and fear.

Entitled Les Inopérants, our wonderfully sophisticated but visibly harmless metal object seems to deflate against a lunar backdrop.
