He graduated from the University of Padua in modern literature, and obtained a doctorate in contemporary art history with Umbro Apollonio, of which he is later became an assistant. At the same time, he took Luigi Tito's classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and has long taught art history at the city's art school. The critical and didactic activity constantly follows the artistic research which develops along a very personal thread of self-reflection starting from the first painting published in 1969. The surface material, understood as a pure convention, is the thread which unites all his work in cycles, from the same fabrics of the 70s and 80s to the following transparencies, theaters of shadows and lights on the canvas and on the walls of buildings. From the beginning of the 90s, transparencies take shape from the shadows that inhabit them, becoming metaphysical pirates, realities that enjoy the ambiguous status of objects and, at the same time, twins of the soul, they are the shadows on the Net. In 1992 he was invited to the Lausanne Biennale and in 1995 he exhibited as part of the exhibitions promoted by the XLVI Venice Biennale. Since then, he has traveled the world: Venice, Milan, Paris, Toronto, Montreal, Tokyo, Antwerp - with a flash that "blows" the shadow of passers-by between the buildings of the cities, stops it and presents it emancipated from the body to the surface of a screen, where it slowly fades. An ephemeral monument to the passing miracle of existence, an astonished discovery of oneself and the event of one's own evaporation. Often covered with a mesh that makes them visible, these shadows constantly emerge, in the form of new plastic graffiti, from the walls of the cities that Martinelli wants to mark as human. Italian and international galleries and public institutions are interested in his work and disseminate it through exhibitions and publications. Historians, art critics and intellectuals see it as a touching intervention in the general feeling of loss of identity and solitude of our time. A healthy reaction against the indifference to the man in the city today.
