"Armored Hanging With Embroidery Late 17th-early 18th Century"
- Composite work: elements of report embroidery applied on a soft green damask background, polychrome silk embroidery late 17th - early 18th century. The applied embroidery elements adorn the fabric with a symmetrical composition. They appear in the form of friezes of cut flowers or scrolls of blooming flowers populated with animals (birds and deer). These applied embroideries are of the most beautiful effect, due to their quality of execution, the contrast between the stitches and the split stitches and the freshness of the colored palette. They were made with the kind concern to diversify the species and to use a polychromy of great vivacity; the joy of the motifs emerges all the more strongly. Furthermore, the plant and bird motifs of the embroidery seem to echo the more discreet ones of the green damask background.
- In the center of this hanging there is, in application, an embroidered coat of arms; a helmet surmounting the view of a deer emerging from a forest, all set against a background of scrollwork. This is a relief embroidery with metallic threads and satin stitches. In the curved parts, we can observe a removal of metal which made it possible to work certain elements in three dimensions. This raised embroidery gives more body to the coat of arms, its presence is reinforced.
- A trimmings sewn at the bottom on a piece of taffeta elegantly completes the framing of this hanging.
- Lined hanging. Good state of conservation, please note (see photos) some wear and a trace of humidity (white halo on the damask)
