"Large Oil On Canvas: Mrs Briollet And Her Daughter. Signature Of Etienne Dupuis. 1836. 19th C."
Elegant and large portrait of a mother and her daughter in an intimate scene: Mme Briollet, aged sixteen here and her mother, Mme Briollet née Bessard. Dressed and styled in the fashion of the years that France lived under the July Monarchy, the scene here combines rigor (Mrs. Briollet mother) and coquetry (Mrs. Briollet daughter). The sewing kit presented by the young girl reflects the social role assigned to housewives at that time: education, management of the house which fell to women in the large families of the industrial bourgeoisie. The Orléans painter Etienne Dupuis admirably captures the tacit complicity between the women: one belonging to the future and the other turned towards her past. Signature lower right. Gilded wood frame from the Restoration period. Never re-lined. In house condition. Louis-Philippe period (1830-1848). Large table which can be cleaned in our workshop and upon request. Beautiful document of Orléans history.
