Steel, gilded brass, wood and Long leather. total: 109 cm Length. blade: 88 cm The frame is in gilded brass, the oval section cap is short, the tail cut into a brace and marked with a horizontal groove at the top, the globular rivet button. The wooden handle is entirely filigreed with herringbone braided brass wire. The joining arch is arched and supports three secondary “S” branches, grooved and ending in volutes. The upper branch is split. Wide top, quillon with drop. The straight steel blade, with hollow pan, with a single edge and gutter, is blued on the first third and engraved near the heel with the initials “NK” and on both sides, in floral registers formerly gilded, with the words : “Gendarmerie…” the rest of which was erased following the revolutionary period. Blackened leather scabbard is equipped, like cavalry and dragoons, with three brass fittings: cap with button and bail ring, bracelet with bail ring and bouterolle with frontal dart. The Marechaussee, known since 1791 under the name of the National Gendarmerie, is defined according to the edict of 1778 in these terms: "the Marechaussee is used in all circumstances to maintain good order by the public authority."
