Object description :

"Italy - Republic Of Venice - Wax Lamp In Sterling Silver Circa 1740"
Interesting and rare wax lamp in solid silver from the first half of the 18th century, Venetian Republic period. It rests on three small curved skate feet, the base plain, swollen and circular; hemmed to the contour, the lid is domed into long radiating gadroons leaving the central threaded chimney, open to the passage of the wick, the latter rolled up in its receptacle. An old consolidation, with tin at the height of the annular handle (see photos). Hallmarks of the Republic of Venice, the lion of Saint Mark in "moleca". (Venice seal used from the 14th to the 18th century.) Two testers' hallmarks under the handle, hallmarks inside the receptacle as well as on the lid (see photos). Similar work is presented in the documentation book, “House Silverware from the 16th to the 19th Century” by Alain Gruber at Editions “Office du Livre”. for the city of Padua around 1740, which allows us to identify and date the one presented here. Length to handle: 10.8 cm./ 4.25 in. Height: 7 cm. / 2.76 in. Weight of solid silver: 148 Gr. The wax lamp was very popular, particularly in Italy, because the wick ended up going out on its own. It was used to cross the corridors, as a night light in the rooms, for the same purpose as the hand candle holder.
