Jacques MARTIN (Villeurbanne, 1844 - Lyon, 1919) - Vase of flowers on an entablature After studying at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Jacques Martin became director of the Coignet factory, specializing in the production of concrete. Around 1878 he became self-taught in painting and set up a workshop on the premises of his factory. The Lyon painter François Vernay (1821-1896) encouraged him and gave him advice. Thus, from 1881, he presented his work in salons in Lyon and Paris. Jacques Martin's style is characterized by the use of generous paste, flamboyant colors and light making his compositions vibrate. The colored mixtures are skilfully used; the painter poses secondary colors or intermediate tones next to the pure color creating a harmonious colorful melody.
