"Tapestry "winged Deer" Version Printed In 1960 - No. 1370"
The original version of the Winged Deer tapestry is a mid-15th century tapestry kept in the Deville room of the Rouen Museum of Antiquities: This tapestry dates from the end of the reign of Charles VII (1422-1461), a period of appeasement and of artistic flowering after the end of the Hundred Years' War. Tapestry was very popular at this time both for decorating the walls of wealthy homes and for warming up interiors. The scenes depicted are either religious or secular. The emblematic is very present in tapestries at a time when artistic production is the work of rich patrons; the latter include on the works the weapons and emblems which represent them. The Winged Deer Tapestry is a large piece of wool and silk (3.47 m x 3.80 m). It represents three winged deer, emblems of the King of France since Charles VI. Crowns and coats of arms with the arms of France – three fleurs-de-lis on an azure background – hang from their necks. One of the deer is lying in the middle of an enclosure and holds between its legs a red standard decorated with golden suns and depicting Saint Michael, protector of the kingdom of France, slaying the dragon. Around the pole of the banner and on either side of the three deer, we can read on three banners the following inscriptions: Cest standard / est une sign / Qui aloial francois enseignement / never to bandonner it / if it does not want its / goodness [b for h] give. Weapons bear [very] glorious/And over all victorious. If noble na/dissoubz the skies [I] could not /[por]ter better.
