"Large Canivet On Paper And Metal Sheet – Circa 1670"
In a gilded wooden frame, we present to you a spectacular work of devotional cutouts. It is on a blue background, the color of the Virgin, for the part surrounding a central motif made in graphite. Our Virgin wears a textile dress embroidered with metallic threads and openwork copper pieces. The phylactery which covers the miniature invokes: “Consolatrix Afflictorum Ora pro nobis” or: Comforter of the afflicted, pray for us. The base also bears an inscription: “Maria Matri Iesu Consolatrici Afflitorum Patro nae Civitatis Lucem burgentis in Sacello Soe. Jesu Miraculis Clarae", or: Mary Mother of Jesus, Consoler of the Afflicted, Patron Saint of the City of Luxembourg The decoration is with large foliage and flower scrolls, and a mesh made up of stars with multiple branches. On the upper part of the montage is represented a canopy surmounting a flower vase as well as two birds with outstretched wings on a perch and two surprising squirrels carrying a parasol.
A work from the 17th century Dimensions of 51 cm high by 45 cm Good condition - old reassembly of the frame.
The cult of Our Lady of Consolation developed in the church of the Jesuit college of Luxembourg, giving rise to a pilgrimage in 1624. This devotion was propagated in the Duchy of Luxembourg and the diocese of Trier. Many chapels will subsequently take this term. The Virgin was proclaimed patron saint of Luxembourg in 1666.
