"“salammbô” By Jean-antoine Idrac"
"Salammbô" in gilded bronze is a statue produced at the end of the 19th century by the Parisian foundry Thiébaut Frères based on the marble sculpture created in 1882 by the sculptor Jean-Antoine Idrac. This edition, which is in very good condition, has benefited from high quality casting and particularly careful carving. The artist's signature and the founder's stamp appear on the base. Subject representing the heroine of a novel by Gustave Flaubert published in 1862, Salammbô flamboyant princess of Carthage is entwined with her python snake, inspiring many artists at that time. Jean-Antoine Idrac was born in Toulouse in 1849, in 1866 he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris in the workshops of Falguière and Cavelier, he won a Prix de Rome in 1873 and stayed at the Villa Médicis from 1874 to 1877. On his return he obtained important state orders and was named knight of the Legion of Honor in 1882 but his death at the age of 35 interrupted a glorious destiny.
