Object description :

"Bernard Molitor: Exceptional Stamped Mahogany Planter From The Consulate Period."
Superb planter in mahogany and mahogany veneer stamped B.Molitor, Consulate period.

Very recognizable characteristic of the famous cabinetmaker: the hamstring feet. Here he gives us a magnificent demonstration of his art by sculpting, in solid mahogany, these three monopods in the round ending in claws and starting with a large acanthus leaf.
At their top, the round planter box, in mahogany veneer, highlighted by its openwork brass gallery, is decorated with its zinc basin.
Another characteristic of Bernard Molitor: the use of solid mahogany of exceptional quality, testifies to the attention paid by the latter to the choice of wood species.
The refined composition of this planter matches the innovative character of certain pieces of furniture made by Molitor at the very beginning of the Consulate period.
Its characteristics and the abandonment of ornamental bronzes underline the continual search for new forms.

Rare model, of exceptional quality.

Very good state of conservation.

Buffer varnished by an art cabinetmaker.

Stamped B.MOLITOR, still visible in low light.

Consulate period, circa 1797-1800

Bernard Molitor (1755 - 1833) :
According to Monelle Hayot: Bernard Molitor is a Luxembourg cabinetmaker who leaves to try his luck in Paris. In the 18th century, France was a veritable melting pot of the arts and the spirit. He is one of the last masters of the corporation who worked for the king. Artisan of a world of quality, fantasy and elegance which is coming to an end, he has one of the only workshops that the revolutionary turmoil will not succeed in destroying. He obtained superb orders from the Directory, Napoleon, King Jerome, Westphalia and private collectors including the Duke of Choiseul Praslin. From the Directory to the Restoration, he knew how, while satisfying the whims of ephemeral fashions, to maintain an original style. His subjects of inspiration are influenced by current events, at the time of the Return from Egypt, in particular, but his style remains Ancien Régime. Solid mahogany and precious woods adorn the most beautiful furniture with their beauty without fuss. One of Molitor's great assets will be knowing how to play with this simplicity. The return of taste to the antique helps it, favoring this good sobriety, which characterizes its production. In fact, he will always be more at ease in the execution of furniture in mahogany or ebony, decorated with oriental lacquer panels, than in marquetry works. Bernard Molitor's success is undeniable and growing despite times of acute crisis. It has two causes: a talented artist, he is also a businessman and a shrewd financier.
