Pair of magnificent pots / planters made in the Totai Shippo or Jiki-Shippo technique of cellular enamel on porcelain. The central decorative motif consists of stylized chrysanthemums (kiku), which symbolize good fortune, beauty, youth and longevity. They are surrounded by various floral ornamental designs and, in some places, a background made using a technique reminiscent of wood bark. The feet and the upper edge are painted in underglaze cobalt.
Totai/Jiki-Shippo, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).

Good state of conservation, minor damage to the enamel shown in the photographs, two feet of one of the pots glued.
