"Pair Of Bronze And Marble Candelabra, Directoire Period"
Pair of gilded and patinated bronze candelabra. On a white marble base stand three leaning bronze caryatids. At their feet, fine reliefs present a procession of putti playing musical instruments. This putti frieze is reminiscent of the art of Clodion's reliefs. The caryatids support on their heads a cushion and basket of fruits and flowers from which the three arms of lights extend. These are chiselled with foliage and the binets with interlacing. In the center of the sconces, a branch of patinated bronze fleur-de-lis completes this composition.
Circa 1790-1800.
This pair of candelabra is characteristic of the return to Greek or Roman Antiquity which developed in interior decoration and furniture at the end of the 18th century.
