Renaissance majolica, Urbino 16th century "Peleo et Tettise".
Historiated dish with mythological subject; decorated majolica attributable to the Fontana workshop in Urbino and datable to the second half of the 16th century (see publication of the exhibition catalogue Faenza Museo Internazionale della Ceramica). The dish shows restorations due to some past breakage. Title on the reverse side referring to the myth that sees Peleus supported by the centaur Chiron engaged in a continuous struggle against the same nymph (Thetis) who was able to transform herself into a snake, a lion and fire in order to escape the wedding, but then succumbed to the influence of Zeus and the wedding was celebrated on Mount Pelion in the presence and under the protection of all the gods.
