Biography of Cabanas Oteiza:
Born around 1883 in San Sebastian, and after studying in Paris, he specialized in painting Basque farmhouses, with such success that he sold everything he produced.
He also painted landscapes and caricatures.
This led to numerous exhibitions in Paris, where he presented his works at the renowned Delclaux art gallery, and in Spain: San Sebastián (1910); in the salons of El Pueblo Vasco (1915); Círculo de Bellas Artes and Ateneo de Bilbao (1915); in Madrid in 1916; in San Sebastian, Bilbao, and Barcelona in 1917.
This career was interspersed with numerous trips to Latin America, exhibiting his paintings primarily in Buenos Aires, always with extraordinary success.
In 1926, the National Commission of Fine Arts of Argentina acquired the work entitled "Calle de aldea." In 1947, he visited Tandil, in the province of Buenos Aires, and years later settled there, eventually landing in Mendoza, where he ended his life.
Notes on the artist from the book "A Century of Painting in the Basque Country," by Alexandre Hurel and Michel de Jaureguiberry:
"Cabanas Oteiza specialized in painting Basque farmhouses, as well as producing Basque-style portraits, with their own distinct personality and a familiar touch that makes them sensitive and deeply human."
